A crazy, spontaneous, life-altering adventure, the dictionary meaning for Bilched sums up the mad-cap coming-of-age teen comedy shot in the eastern suburbs that premiered in Sydney last night.

Bilched sees the return of small screen star Jeremy Cumpston, who played Connor Costello on All Saints, alongside Jeremy Sims, Alan Dukes and Rhys Muldoon, who all have guest roles, but the stars here are the cast of young actors under 20.

They bring an energy and freshness to this wild, and hilarious, ride focusing on the final days of high school.

Cumpston’s son, Hal, wrote and plays the lead role in Bilched that has all hallmarks of a teen drama, including the friendship, rivalry and young love, but there is a deeper layer exploring family malfunction.

Cumpston, 19, said he wrote Bilched after complaining to his dad about the lack of quality Australian teen films.

“There was this golden era in the 80s and after that, the seminal coming of age films - the really great ones like Dazed and Confused and Superbad – have only come from the US and UK. Aussie teens are pretty funny, I wanted to capture that,” he said.

When he showed his dad the script for Bilched, Dr Cumpston thought it was so funny he offered to help back the project and direct it himself.

He said with a budget of under $1 million Bilched’s production costs wouldn’t cover the catering on most films.

He said through a network of talented and passionate experts willing to take a gamble this feature film became a reality.

Bilched also puts a spotlight on the eastern suburbs, with the film putting Dover Heights, Bondi, Bronte, Tamarama, Coogee, Maroubra, Malabar, Paddington and Darlinghurst up on the big screen.

There was a packed, and very excited crowd, at the Randwick Ritz last night for the Australian premiere of this clever comedy. The Ritz screenings continue tonight, Monday and Tuesday at 7pm.

There is also a small session at the Clovelly Hotel on Sunday at 6.30pm that includes Q&A with the cast and crew.

Bilched is then rolling out in select cinemas, bilched.com
