BOTANY was once where paints, plastics and industrial chemicals were made.
But soon it could become known for producing something altogether different: beer.
A development application has been submitted for a brewery and bar in Erith St.
The developers propose renovating an existing industrial warehouse and office block to accommodate kegs, barrels and other brewing equipment.
The brewery will be capable of producing 300,000 litres a year — which equates to 705,882 schooners or 528,169 pints.
The microbrewery/bar would be the first of its kind in the area if the Bayside Planning Panel gives it the green light.
It could be the first of many in the area with Botany becoming increasingly popular with young professionals.
Matthew Pallister, who lives in the same street, has written in support of the development.
“The microbrewery will not only bring in a great vibe to the area but a relaxed way of life with craft beer booming,” he wrote. “This could be a great move to get Botany on the map for things other than shipping and container trucks.”
Developers Avenue Studios propose building a bar and beer garden alongside the brewing room.
It has been designed with beer aficionados in mind with the brewing equipment — which includes a malting mill, a kettle for boiling the grain to release the sugars and a number of stainless steel tanks — visible from the bar.
The beer garden will feature tables, chairs and planter boxes. And for those who get a bit peckish after a few schooners, there is space for visiting food trucks and outdoor food stalls.
The bar will have room for 100 drinkers at any one time with five staff members on duty.
The brewery will be operational 24 hours a day, while the bar will be open from 10am to 10pm and the beer garden from 10am to 9pm.
The developers claim there will be no odour from the brewing process due to the use of a special vapour condensing unit.
The Bayside Planning Panel will decide on the application in the next few months.
