THEY were once as much a part of summer as backyard cricket and barbecues on the beach.
But this is what has become of the Botany water slides which were ripped down last week.
As previously reported in the Southern Courier earlier this yearBayside Council made the decision to demolish the slides over safety fears.
The council has pledged to replace them by investing $24 million in the aquatic centre. It includes a 25m indoor pool and hydrotherapy pool, spa and sauna, an indoor gym and sports courts.
Bayside Mayor Bill Saravinovski said he recognised the importance of the centre to the community but said it needed investment.
He previously told the Courier the proposal was in its early stages and was subject to change. But he said it was a sign of intent from the council.

“You only get to do something like this once and we want to do it right,” he said.
The council argued the slides could not remain as they were too dangerous.
The mayor said there had been 46 injuries between December 2010 and December 2016, including one incident which allegedly left a man with bleeding on the brain.
