Aldi is going small in its latest plan to entice shoppers through the doors under plans for a new “corner store” in inner Sydney.
Artisan baked goods, barista-style coffee and freshly-made sushi are among the products shoppers could expect to find in the proposed new small-format supermarket in Rosebery.
Located within the Cannery dining hub on Mentmore St, the corner store would offer convenience products, grab-and-go meal options as well as a selection of the company’s famous special buys.
The $1.4 million development would also feature a distinct layout differentiating it from the typical Aldi outlet and would come complete with a small cafe serving up fresh coffee.
“It’s like a regular Aldi, only a bit smaller and a bit closer,” Aldi said of its plans.
“With fancy bread, meals to go, lattes, piccolos and so on – OK so maybe it’s not exactly like a regular Aldi. But it’s still good. And it’s still different.”
The development plan is in line with Aldi’s strategy announced in 2020 to introduce small format outlets in inner metropolitan areas of Australia’s major cities.
If approved, it would become the company’s second mini supermarket in Sydney after the retailer cut the ribbon on the state’s first in North Sydney late last year.
“The concept (is designed) to be more market than supermarket and to convey a sense of being the local ‘corner store’,” Aldi said in its plans.
“(It would) directly meet the day to day needs of workers in the area and will also provide employment opportunities.”
Plans to the City of Sydney show the Rosebery outlet would include distinct street art on external walls.
Five street artists have already been short-listed to create the work including George Rose, Tim Phibs, Geebs, Studio Dennis and Nico.
Plans are currently under assessment by the City of Sydney.
If approved, the store would open from 6am to 10pm on Monday to Saturday and 7am to 9pm on Sundays.
