Amy Donato is hooked on Coogee’s seaside food culture and her locally produced cookbook, The Coogee Catch will be one of the ethical and earth-loving gifts featured at the Best Gift Market on Sunday, November 17.
The cookbook, that features 39 recipes from local restaurants and foodies, will be debuting at a giant one-day only market day on Coogee beach.
“The Coogee Catch is a compendium of much that is wonderful about Coogee, a gift book inspired by the rich culinary diversity in one of Australia’s oldest beachside suburbs,” Donato said.
She said the inspiration to create a cookbook first came about when her in-laws visited from Ireland.
“During their stay, I struggled to find a gift that reflected their time here in Coogee,” she said.
“It was then I felt that Coogee was calling out for something tangible, something that spoke the voice of the community and what it had to offer.
“So began my journey, with baby Wylie and camera in tow, visiting businesses, learning their story and collecting recipes. Utilising my graphic design skills along with my novice photography, I slowly started to piece together the elements of this book.”
She said the cookbook was dedicated to her daughter Wylie, named after Olympian Wilhelmina “Mina” Wylie, one of Australia’s first female Olympic swimmers and daughter of Irish-born Henry Alexander Wylie who established Wylie’s Baths in 1907.
The Coogee Catch recipes include Barzura’s signature nasi goreng.
“Over the years Barzura has had many showstopping dishes but none quite so much as their nasi goreng, an Indonesian fried rice jam packed with delicious spicy goodness,” Donato said.
A percentage of the Coogee Catch sales will go directly to The Royal Hospial for Women Foundation to help fund much needed equipment and services for women, babies and families. For online purchases go to etsy.com/au/shop/thecoogeecatch
