UNIVERSITY of NSW students could soon be enjoying a new $100 million physical sciences precinct.
A proposal to add a twin to UNSW’s Material Sciences and Engineering (MSE) building is on public exhibition.
The Science and Engineering (SE) building would be Grimshaw Architects’ second contribution to the Kensington campus, after completing the MSE building early last year.
The campus has been remade from stone and terracotta and the facade of the building “combines masonry with transparency.”
Vertical blades with four angles of rotation encase the building, responding to sunlight. The Glass-fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC) louvres work to provide thermal and solar protection.
The 69m building will sit adjacent to the MSE building, connected by a walkway.
Grimshaw partner Andrew Cortese said the architecture’s primary purpose was to “enable innovation and research that sets new precedents globally.”
“This new laboratory environment will enable activities to occur in connected ‘research neighbourhoods and academic forums’,” he said.
The MSE building received the 2016 Educational Architecture Award.
