Football is in Kosta Grozos’ blood.
The 15-year-old Kingsgrove footballer has been playing for about two thirds of his life and has no desire to stop any time soon.
It began when his parents enrolled him with the Earlwood Wanderers Football Club aged five.
“My parents used to play when they were younger. They wanted me to carry it on,” Kosta said.
Having played for the Earlwood Wanderers, the Inter Lions, based in Enfield, and Sutherland Shire, Kosta has earned his stripes in the game as a promising young player.
He was hand-picked for the Western Sydney Wanderers’ first under-18 team this season rather than the under-16 side — the first step towards his goal of playing for first grade.
“I was excited. I was a bit shocked as well,” Kosta said. “They’re stronger and faster. It’s really competitive.”
He has spent the past three years on the NSW futsal team, travelling around the state to compete. “I’m trying get fitter and work on my feet,” the midfielder said.
Kosta is The Express’ latest nominee for the Junior Sports Star award, sponsored by Rebel, which recognises the outstanding achievements of young athletes.
There are three other categories in the competition; Young Sporting Spirit, sponsored by Simonds Homes, which recognises athletes who have overcome obstacles and demonstrate sportsmanship; Team Spirit, sponsored by FOX SPORTS PULSE, given to teams that play fairly; and Service to Sport, awarded to an individual of a sporting organisation who shows passion.
