Simon Harradine: Waterloo man stole staffy after valium theft

When a Sydney man had his valium allegedly stolen while he slept, he decided to exact revenge by stealing a staffy, named Blackley, from a Bondi home.

A Sydney couple have paid the ultimate price for allegedly stealing valium from a man who has made it clear he was not to be messed with.

According to documents tendered to Waverley Local Court, Sydney man Simon Harradine stole his friend’s black staffordshire bull terrier because she had allegedly nicked his prescription drug, diazepam.

The agreed facts reveal on May 6 last year, Harradine, 49, of Waterloo, arrived at the victim’s Bondi home where she lived with her husband and ‘Blackley’ the staffy, who had been given to her by her sister.

“The victim and her husband know the accused as “Harry”, as the husband only knew the accused as an associate,” the facts stated.

“(Harradine) sat on the victim’s recliner chair next to the black Staffordshire bull terrier … the victim went to her bedroom to sleep as she was tired from staying up the previous night.

“As the victim entered the bedroom, her husband had walked to the bathroom to shower. At this time the accused was alone in the main lounge room with the canine.”

The facts state that a short time later, the victim heard her husband say: “babe, he’s gone” and realised the dog was missing from the unit.

“The victim had seen CCTV footage from neighbours which observed the accused holding the dog exiting the victim‘s unit,” court documents stated.

According to the facts, about 8.10pm the next day police were patrolling Darlinghurst Rd, Potts Point when they saw Harradine outside a medically supervised injecting centre.

Officers had seen a police appeal for Harradine and recognised him as the man in the CCTV footage. They arrested the 49-year-old, who later admitted to stealing the dog.

Court documents reveal Harradine said to police: “I woke up at my mate’s place and noticed my valium was gone. They stole it so I took the dog. It was a little black thing. I took it to my mate Luke’s.”

Officers went to Luke’s address but could not find the dog.

In Waverley Local Court on Tuesday, Harradine pleaded guilty to steal property in a dwelling or house.

Harradine tried to interrupt his lawyer on multiple occasions, causing Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge to tell the court: “this fellow’s attitude is of absolute concern”.

Harradine’s lawyer asked the magistrate to take into consideration his “medical issues”.

“He was assaulted last November, had a split skull… it has affected his thinking,” the lawyer said.

“He has suffered from disordered thinking for quite some time.”

He is due to be sentenced on March 23.
