TAFE NSW is on the lookout for 250 new trade and construction teachers following a major announcement at Quakers Hill.
The huge recruitment drive was announced on the back of a spike in enrolments for trade courses, at the education provider.
A taskforce has been set up to find 253 new teachers over the next 12 months.
The majority of the new teachers will deliver training in plumbing, electrical, construction (both civil and residential) and carpentry.
The announcement was made on Thursday morning at TAFE NSW’s Nirimba campus in Quaker’s Hill and will have a direct impact on the Nirimba campus as well as nearby Mt Druitt campus.
NSW Assistant Minister for Skills Adam Marshall made the recruitment announcement and said the current construction boom across the state was making room for thousands of jobs.
He said 21,600 skilled construction jobs would become available over the next three years, with 10,400 new workers needed in Western Sydney alone.
“The NSW Government is driving an infrastructure pipeline that is creating careers for tens of thousands of people across trades like plumbing, electrical and construction,” Mr Marshall said.
“The taskforce will recruit 253 new frontline teaching staff to skill up our workers of the future to build key infrastructure like schools and hospitals across metropolitan and rural and regional NSW.”
A NSW Teachers Federation spokesman said they were happy with the announcement which was the “first significant recruitment drive for TAFE in many years”.
The spokesman said the federation, which represents many TAFE staff, was pleased the majority of the new teachers would be taken on as permanent and temporary teachers rather than casual teachers.
Riverstone state Liberal MP Kevin Conolly also attended the announcement on Thursday and said about 100 of the new teachers (40 per cent) would be based in Western Sydney.
“Our local Nirimba campus is earmarked to receive eight of these new teachers, and this is a huge win for the local area, boosting skilled trade education locally where the construction industry is booming,” he said.
“This is great news for local young people looking to realise their potential and to secure a good job for the future. Their prospects have never been brighter.”
Government-funded enrolments at TAFE NSW have increased 19 per cent for electricians and 11 per cent for carpenters and plumbers compared to this time last year.
Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said the $81 billion infrastructure program under way across NSW was creating plenty of jobs.
“Western Sydney is the beating heart of the state’s infrastructure agenda and is creating new job opportunities for a generation of skilled and dynamic young people,” Mr Ayres said.
Positions for the teaching jobs will be advertised online at the I Work For NSW website.
