STORM, just 8 months old, and her kittens are lucky to be alive after they were saved from underneath a Riverstone rental home slated for demolition.
Quick-thinking tenants contacted the Animal Welfare League NSW, as the home was soon to be demolished, and the mother cat and her kittens were saved.
Animal Welfare League NSW western suburbs branch member Glyn Boobyer went to the rescue, crawling under the house to reach the thin, flea-infested cat and her 10-day-old kittens.
She even called her husband for back up to remove decking planks to reach the felines.
After the unexpected and difficult rescue mission, Mrs Boobyer did not have a foster career or veterinary clinic lined up.
However, league director and veterinarian David Hope stepped in, offering free care at his clinic. Dr Hope has monitored Storm and her kittens, attending the clinic twice on a public holiday to feed and care for them.
Since then one of Storm’s kittens has died after veterinary care did not improve her health.
However, three other kittens have found homes and hopes are high for Storm and one lone male kitten named Sven to find new families.
Cat welfare officer Jeanette Emanuel said she was determined to find Storm and Sven a forever home.
“Storm is a gentle loving cat with beautiful eyes and would be a great companion to anyone wanting a soft-natured female cat,” Mrs Emmanuel said.
“Due to the flea infestation and poor nutrition plus feeding five babies, Storm’s coat has been affected, but she has slowly recovered and we expect her to be in tip top shape in the near future.”
