Veteran basketball coach Ross Nicholls is guaranteeing that kids will always come first at Stanhope Gardens Basketball Club once the not-for-profit organisation launches in August.
After more than 40 years in the sport, Nicholls decided that the time had come to start a new basketball club which emphasises quality coaching without sacrificing low costs.
“The whole thing is going to be volunteer-driven,” Nicholls said.
“The coaching is going to be free, volunteer parents will be on the committee and the only payment necessary will be to cover court hire.
“We want to keep the costs as low as possible and help kids develop their game while giving all the money straight back to them.”
Based out of Blacktown Leisure Centre, Stanhope Gardens Basketball Club will run weekly training sessions consisting of a mix of basic skills training and games.
Parents will also be invited to lend a hand.
“The aim is to teach the kids basic fundamentals and enhance their skills while the games remind the kids how to apply those skills,” Nicholls said.
“With the parents getting involved, we can run at a bit better price and they get to go through the journey together with their kids.”
With plenty of people already showing interest in the club, Nicholls is confident that he’s got a winning formula to establish something really special.
“It’s a really green area with plenty of adults playing basketball but no kids,” he said.
“We’re very excited to get out there, create a basketball club that better that meets the needs of parents and their children and see what develops from that.”
Stanhope Gardens Basketball Club will be commencing with a free introductory coaching session on Friday, August 2.
All participants must bring their own basketball.
