FORMER Rouse Hill Times Junior Sports Star of the year Alex Hulley will be carrying the hopes of Australia on her shoulders at Saturday night’s final of the hammer throw at the 2016 IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
Australia’s finest junior hammer thrower in decades qualified with her effort of 62.65 metres to easily top the qualifying distance of 61.50m. Finland’s Krista Tervofinfin tops the qualifiers with her throw of 64.63m.
“The second one was good, it went 62 and half. I’m so happy, I’m so ready for the final, I’m excited,” said Hulley, who had a personal best of 65.75m at the recent nationals.
“I was a little bit nervous (with my first throw), I just hit the ground with my hammer so something went wrong and it didn’t go far.”
Hulley said she was glad the competition finally got underway for her after two warm up events in Mannheim, Germany, where she finished second and Suwalki, Poland, where she was the winner.
The final is scheduled at 5pm Polish time tomorrow (Sunday 1.00am AEST).
The championships are being held from July 19-24.
