Trampolinist Liam Christie and multi-sport athlete Kieren Morson have taken out the top prizes for the Rouse Hill Times at the 2018 Local Sports Stars gala awards night at Bankstown Sports Club.
Liam, 16, of Kellyville Ridge, was named this year’s Junior Sports Star winner while 10-year-old Kieren Morson from Maraylya won the Young Sporting Spirit award.
Liam was one of only two trampolinists from Oceania to qualify for this year’s Youth Olympic Games.
His selection followed a dominant performance at the 2018 national championships, in which he was named Australian champion in both individual and double mini trampoline.
“Winning this award means a lot to me,” Liam said.
“It means all the hard work, training and dedication that’s been put in throughout the year has really paid off.”
Meanwhile, despite being a state level swimmer and a state representative in Little Athletics, Kieren’s talent shines the brightest in Nippers, where he’s earned state team representation in ocean swimming, board and associated relay.
He travels more than an hour each way up to three times a week to train with Collaroy Surf Lifesaving Club.
It was also a successful night for the Rouse Hill Rams under-14 boys football squad, who took out the Young Sporting Spirit-Team award.
The team has won the Hills Football Association’s minor premiership and premiership in each of the past three years and even finished runners-up at this year’s Football NSW State Cup.
Team manager Trevor Brown says he’s proud of everything the team has accomplished.
“I’m very proud of them,” he said.
“This award came as a big surprise actually, we didn’t really expect it. We just had a mammoth season and this just tops it off.”
In other categories, the overall Young Sporting Spirit award went to Forestville footballer Jacob Trzecinski, 17, while 16-year-old Strathfield diver Sam Fricker was named the overall Junior Sports Star.
The event also saw a host of current stars from all walks of the sporting landscape, including NSW Swifts player Sarah Klau, gather to meet the stars of the future and their families.
