CONSTRUCTION has commenced at the former Schofields Aerodrome site, which will be home to more than 1100 new homes as part of a multimillion-dollar Defence Housing Australia residential development.
The new $300m residential neighbourhood, known as Akuna Vista, will provide 200 homes from defence members and their families, while 900 homes will go on offer to the wider community across several stages.
The masterplanned development sits on the site of the former Naval Air Station HMAS Nirimba in Schofields.
DHA chairman Sandy MacDonald said the development at the 140ha site was masterplanned for the community.
“The premium location of the project and the excellent connectivity and public transport services for future residents, combined with the natural surroundings and green spaces, will ensure Akuna Vista will grow to be a vibrant community,” he said.
“This important project will provide much needed supply to the Sydney housing market and improve housing affordability in a priority growth area.”
A new school, retail precinct, as well as 40 netball courts, tennis sports and two multi-purpose fields as part of a sporting and recreational zone will be developed as part of the project.
A DHA spokeswoman said the Aerodrome hangar would not be reinstalled as part of the masterplan project, despite earlier proposals to see the landmark returned to the site.
