The State Government has given Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) the green light to undertake planning for the design of the Townson-Burdekin road project.

The road runs from the intersection of Richmond and Townson roads at Marsden Park to the roundabout intersection of Burdekin Rd and Walker St, Schofields.

The Bandon Rd corridor, which has now been completed, will connect Richmond Rd at Marsden Park to Windsor Rd, Vineyard.

The project is expected to reduce traffic congestion at Riverstone.

But more development of the Bandon Rd corridor is subject to funding availability.

Riverstone Chamber of Commerce president Sue Lawrence cautiously welcomed the project announcement.

“Any progress is good progress,’’ she said.

“They’ve actually nominated where the corridor is but they need to get it built.”

The project is part of the government’s North West Growth Centre Road Network Strategy, devised to support the rapid development in the region, where 33,000 homes will be built by 2024.

Once developed, the area is forecast to be home to about 250,000 people.

The RMS is planning the design and undertaking an environmental assessment.

The project is one of several, including the 7.2km Garfield Rd corridor at Riverstone, being discussed under the North West Growth Centre Road Network Strategy.

The RMS is still in planning stages with Garfield Rd east and west, following community feedback in 2013 and 2014.

But Mrs Lawrence said the RMS had ignored concerns about the a railway overpass adversely affecting community amenity, businesses, schools and property.

The chamber said it preferred a bypass as the solution to traffic gridlock.

“The RMS has ignored our concerns about heavy vehicle travelling through town and plan the corridor to be six lanes pumping more heavy vehicle through town,’’ she said.

“Riverstone does not survive with a six-lane road through the centre.

“We need to bypass the heavy traffic.”

She said the spine road included in the Riverstone West draft control plan was the most logical solution and does not rely on government funding.
