POLICE are hunting for thieves who have cut through the fence to steal valuable equipment from the Hawkesbury Rural Fire Service headquarters, potentially affecting the unit’s ability to deal with emergencies this summer
The RFS unit at South Windsor is still counting the cost of the robbery, which occurred sometime during January 8-15, with superintendent Karen Hodges saying it was “pretty disgusting” because the brigade had to do fundraise to buy most of their equipment.
Supt. Hodges said it was the first time the Hawkesbury unit has been burgled and they are all shocked by brazen robbery.
“The thieves took water pumps, generators, chainsaws and other stuff but we won’t know exactly how much was taken until we complete our stock take,” Supt Hodges said.
“They had cut thought the fence and broken into the shipping container where the equipment was stored. It is pretty disgusting this happened because we purchased most of the equipment from our fundraising in the community.
“We have to re-stock now and this does affect our work, so it’s very sad.”
Like many in the RFS, Ms Hodges joined the brigade as a volunteer because her family was involved and has now been with the organisation for more than three decades,
The Hawkesbury RFS attend between 600-700 incidents each year and cover a massive area stretching from Oakville to Colo Heights. The 30-strong crew are made up of volunteers.
Hawkesbury LAC said they are investigating the robbery and have taken fingerprints from the scene.
“The theft took place sometime between January 8-15 and our officers have done a forensic search of the area,” a Hawkesbury LAC spokesman said. “We are continuing to investigate.”
