A game of soccer has turned foul and lead to a man being charged over his alleged role in a brawl at a soccer match in Sydney’s north west on Sunday.
Police were called to Punjabi League of Australia soccer games at 11.30am when a 19-year-old male player allegedly began to argue with another player at Exeter Farm Reserve in Glenwood, where the games were held.
The argument allegedly turned physical before more than 10 people became involved.
During the fight, the 19-year-old man allegedly punched a 28-year-old man in the head and knocked him to the ground.
He was taken to Blacktown Hospital for treatment in a stable condition.
An organiser from the event said it was an “unfortunate incident” that may have been witnessed by up to 100 spectators on the day.
“We had a full day of events and everything was perfect, but this one unfortunate incident,” the spokesman said.
Quakers Hill police confirmed they had been called to the field, during a match between the two rival sides.
“We don’t often get called to sports events, but sometimes players get a little too excited with the game, and it happens,” the police spokesman said.
The officers attended the park during the fracas, which they said had only two participants, with the others attempting to hold off further injuries.
The 19-year-old man was arrested at the scene and taken to Riverstone police station, where he was charged with affray and common assault.
He was granted strict conditional bail and is due to appear at Blacktown Court on Monday, September 16.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
