Electronic hip hop artist Kwame proudly rhymes “Imma local — you can hear it though my vocal”.
The Glenwood artist, whose full name is Rich Amevor, recently crossed one million plays on music streaming platform Spotify — but he’s still a proud western suburbs boy.
In 2016, Kwame was picked by ASAP Ferg from the crowd to get on stage and perform during the American rapper’s Sydney gig.
A video of the encounter, filmed by Kwame’s friend, soon gained attention on social media and introduced the young emerging artist to the country.
The next couple of years proved a busy time for the 20-year-old, including touring the country on a sold-out tour with Peking Duk — which he described as “crazy” — performing at Groovin The Moo in Maitland and being named Triple J’s Feature Artist of the week.
Last month the former Castle Hill High School student followed up on his 2016 debut EP Lesson Learned with Endless Conversations.
This month, he has performed at events for the Vivid festival including a gig at Kings Cross nightclub The Wall on Sunday.
So what next for this western Sydney talent? The sky is the limit — and he plans to do a lot of travelling.
“International definitely (is) the goal, but for now I want to build myself in Australia,” he said.
“I want the whole country backing me so there’s still work to do in Sydney, but there’s a lot more work to do in Melbourne and Brisbane and Perth.”
Most important to him though is the opportunity to “open doors for a new sound” and “pave the way for young artists like myself who just want to make music.”
