THREE years ago, Stanhope Gardens single father of four Paul Lawrence was looking for a lifestyle change.
“Most of my life I have been a stockbroker and for a short period I got into real estate, but I could not wait to be my own boss,” Mr Lawrence said.
That was when he had his “light bulb moment” and decided to turn his hobby in massage therapy into a home-based business.
Paul Lawrence Massage Therapy specialises in the relief of neck and back pain, headaches and migraines, sciatica, lymphatic drainage and muscle soreness.
“The hardest thing about starting a business from home for me was getting the clients to come here,” he said. “You have to provide a product that is better then one you would find in a shopping centre.”
As a result of referral after referral Mr Lawrence was able to build is client base from nothing to having virtually every day being fully booked.
“I started with zero clients and offered free massages to start, just to work out if I had the right approach, once that ground work had been done, then it was a matter of getting my name out there.”
He did a letterbox drop, but found the most effective tool was using social media and in particular Facebook.
“It very much suits the lifestyle I was searching for and now it is just a matter of being able to maintain the level of clients,” he said.
His advice to people thinking about starting their own home-based business is to find a product they are passionate about and make sure to have enough capital for the first year of business.
