MEET Sydney’s first fully working driverless Metro train, set to whisk passengers along at 100km an hour and arrive every four minutes.
The first train for the $8.3 billion Sydney Metro project arrived at the Sydney Metro Trains Facility at Rouse Hill today.
The tracks have also started to be installed for the skytrain.
“This project will be as iconic as the Tube in London, the Paris Metro, the Tokyo metro,” Transport Minister Andrew Constance said.
“It’s going to be on a par with the Harbour Bridge once it’s complete.”
The first six-carriage train will be tested and kitted out at the Rouse Hill centre and ready for service in two years.
“This is Australian history being created,” Mr Constance said.
“This is Metro. This is the magic of it — to see these magnificent trains and to see the tracks being laid.
“This is momentous and it’s a milestone. To see what it is to become and running through here at 100 kays per hour in two years’ time is going to be incredible for the people of NSW, incredible for the people of Australia.”
Mr Constance said the driverless automated train would carry up to 46,000 passengers a year.
“There will be a train every four minutes and there won’t be any need for a timetable, we’re getting on and building Sydney Metro all the way from here to the North West and to Bankstown and the South West, it’s an incredible project.”
The train is assembled overseas in an undisclosed country, but Mr Constance said electronic information panels were built in Western Australia with an engine and windows sourced from France.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the project would improve the “lives of our citizens”.
“The community can start seeing what amazing progress has been made, and people in this community know Metro is here and has arrived in NSW,’’ she said.
“The project is going so well. The project was the first stage of a system, which, when complete, will improve the lives of our citizens.”
The Sydney Metro Northwest project is the first stage of Sydney Metro, which will be the first fully-automated metro rail system in Australia. Sydney Metro Northwest includes eight metro stations, five existing stations upgraded to new metro standards and 4000 new commuter carpark spaces.
