Blacktown City’s new suburb names to go out for public comment

Three new names proposed for Blacktown City will go out for public comment after initial names were rejected by the state names board.

Residents in Blacktown City can soon have their say on proposed new suburbs for the region’s northwest after several names were knocked back by a state board.

The Geographical Names Board is preparing to exhibit the newly-proposed names of Tallawong, Nirimba Marana and Grantham Farm for public comment after Blacktown Council’s previously proposed names, Wran, Lynch and Kwigan, were rejected following community outcry.

The proposal seeks to rename parts of Schofields, Riverstone and Rouse Hill, but hit a snag in July after the board refused to endorse the names.

“The proposed suburb names … were rejected based on the objections received and concern the names did not reflect community interest or represent local usage,” a names board spokesman said.

At last month’s council meeting, councillors supported a recommendation to advise the names board to exhibit both Nirimba Marana and Nirimba Fields for public comment.

The move comes after a meeting of the Aboriginal Advisory Committee offered support for the initial proposal, but recommended Nirimba Marana, which means ‘pelican first’ in the Darug language.

The approved names of Angus, Melonba and Richards and proposed amendments to the boundaries of Marsden Park, Rouse Hill, Shanes Park and Vineyard have been put on hold pending public exhibition of the remaining names.

The new names are expected to be exhibited in the coming weeks.

Final approval will rest with the NSW Minister for Finance and Services.
