A Wollondilly councillor is fighting against a string of “unfair” parking fines in Warragamba.

On December 24 last year a number of people in Warragamba received parking infringements from highway patrol for parking illegally on the verge.

Councillor Judith Hannan is now contesting the fines on residents’ behalf, saying they are “caught between a rock and a hard place”.

“The people of Warragamba have parked on the verge for forever and they have to park on the verge because the streets are only 4.4 metres wide and if you park on the street, people can’t get past,” Cr Hannan said.

“It is illegal to park on the verge — there is no question of that — but it is also illegal not to leave a certain amount of space when you park.

“So there is no way known that these people can park within Warragamba town without parking illegally.”

IN OTHER NEWS

At least 17 people have received parking fines ranging from $260-$320.

Cr Hannan has appealed the fines, however she has already received notification that some have been knocked back.

She has now sought ministerial representation in an attempt to resolve the situation.

She noted similar situations have occurred in other areas, but with different outcomes.

“People in other places that have had a similar situation happen to them have had their fines wiped out because of similar circumstances,” Cr Brennan said.

“But for some reason Warragamba fines seem to be staying in place and I think that is just unfair.”
