Police are urging parents to monitor their child’s online activity following the arrest of a Werrington man charged with grooming a young girl online.
Last month detectives from the Child Abuse and Sex Crime Squad’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit were alerted to an online conversation between the Werrington man and a 14-year-old girl.
Detectives began an investigation, during which they began speaking with the 47-year-old man online.
During the conversation the man believed he was speaking with a 14-year-old girl and during the conversation the man detailed various sexual acts he wished to perform on the “girl”.
The man was arrested yesterday at a shopping centre in Penrith and his mobile phone was seized.
He was charged with use carriage service to procure under 16 years of age for sexual activity.
Bail was refused and he is due to appear at Penrith Court later today.
Following the incident, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec sent a warning to parents about protecting their child online.
“This arrest is a timely reminder for all parents …. keep an eye on how much time your child is spending on the internet, what websites they are visiting and who they may be speaking with,” Superintendent Kerlatec said.
“In this instance police have been notified by the teenager’s parents, so we encourage all parents to talk to their kids about their activities online.”
