Karina McDougal arrested over alleged kidnapping and assault at Colyton

A woman allegedly jumped a fence to escape police before she was charged with kidnapping a man and woman who were allegedly tied up with chains, rope and tape, and assaulted over two days.

Two people have now been charged over an alleged kidnapping where a man and woman were allegedly tied up and held captive for two days in Sydney’s west.

Police attended a home on Richard Cres, Colyton, on Saturday for an unrelated matter and found 28-year-old man Dean Zammit and 38-year-old woman Lauren, who told them they’d been kidnapped for two days.

Police will allege they had been detained in the house by a man armed with a gun since Thursday June 24, tied up with chains, wire, tape and rope.

Police will allege they were assaulted over two days.

The man and woman were taken to Nepean Hospital for treatment as a crime scene was established at the home.

While searching the home police found a 20-year-old man hiding under insulation in the roof before dislodging tiles and climbing on to the roof, allegedly trying to escape.

He was arrested and police found methylamphetamine and cash allegedly hidden in his pants, while a loaded sawn-off shotgun was seized from his car, which was parked in the driveway.

The 20-year-old was taken to Penrith police station and charged with nine offences, including possess unauthorised prohibited firearm, possess unregistered firearm, not keep firearm safely, possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of take/detain in company with intent to get advantage and supply prohibited drug.

He was refused bail and appeared at Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday where he was remanded in custody to appear in court on August 20.

On Tuesday police also arrested 27-year-old Karina McDougal from a home on Henry St, Penrith where she allegedly escaped police and jumped over a fence.

She was taken to Penrith police station and charged with two counts of take/detain in company with intent to get advantage and cause actual bodily harm and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Each offence carries a maximum 25 years’ imprisonment if proven.

She was refused bail and appeared via video link at Penrith Local Court on Wednesday where an application to release her was made.

The court heard the mother of five was already serving an intensive corrections order (home detention) for two offences including affray.

Her solicitor Tess Mulock proposed strict bail conditions including reporting to Mt Druitt police station every day, living at Shalvey and not visiting Penrith unless it was for court. She also said she required bail to treat a broken foot.

But the prosecution told the court it was an “extremely serious matter”in which the alleged victims were held for several hours and Ms McDougal had failed to attend court for other matters.

“The likelihood of the accused complying with these conditions is highly unlikely given she’s on two ICOs,’’ Sgt Melissa Kilminster said.

“In my submission there is absolutely no conditions that could mitigate the risk of failing to attend and committing further offences.’’

Magistrate Fiona Toose said the incident must have been “absolutely terrifying for the (alleged) victims’’ after being tied up.

“I must say the facts of the matter are particularly disturbing,’’ she said.

“This is clearly an overwhelming prosecution case as Ms McDougal is likely to be in custody for some time.

“I don’t believe that any conditions proposed would mitigate the risks. I don’t believe Ms McDougal would comply with any of the conditions.’’

Ms McDougal sobbed throughout the hearing and was particularly upset after bail was refused.

The matter for her and Mr Izzard will return to the court on August 20.
