A section of The Northern Rd in South Penrith will be closed for 12 hours in January, then reduced to one lane, as part of ongoing upgrades.

A Transport for NSW spokeswoman said the closure would be in place between Maxwell St and Jamison Rd.

“Crews are working hard to deliver this important upgrade which will provide easier, faster and safer travel for motorists in western Sydney,” she said.

“To prepare for major works, The Northern Rd will be closed from 9pm on January 3 to 9am on January 4.

“The Northern Rd will then be reduced to one lane in each direction between Maxwell St and Jamison Rd so crews can start building new lanes.

“The traffic lights at the intersection of The Northern Rd and Smith St will also be temporarily switched off.”

The spokeswoman said the eastern side of the Smith St intersection would also temporarily close.

“Access to the western side of Smith St will be restricted to left in and left out only,” she said.

“Motorists wishing to access Smith St will be detoured via Maxwell St, Fragar Rd, Colless St, Derby St, and Bringelly Rd.”

The changed traffic conditions will be in place until January 24.

“Road work signs and traffic controllers will guide road users through the temporary changes and detours while they’re in place,” the spokeswoman said.

“Motorists are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and follow the direction of all signs and traffic control.”
