HENRY Davies is dreaming big.
The Springwood resident’s not only looking to help the Western Sydney Wanderers win the National Youth League this season but he’s eyeing off a contract with the top squad.
The 17-year-old, who has already represented Australia at the youth level, is entering one of the most important periods of his budding career and success for the Wanderers in the next month will be important.
“A first grade contract with the Wanderers is the main goal and I think that’s achievable in the next year or two,” Davies said.
“A lot of players from the top squad are coming back down and playing in the Youth League so you’ve got to raise your standards and constantly be at your best.”
Davies got his start at the Wanderers through coach Trevor Morgan, who was his school mentor at Westfields Sports High.
The Wanderers sit second in their conference and if they top their group they’ll play the winner of the other pool in the final.
Their next match is against Sydney FC on January 2 at Lambert Park.
“Things are going well and if we keep winning we’ll make the final. We’re looking good so far,” Davies said.
Davies started his career as a forward but has steadily moved back through the field and has found a home at centre back.
“I’m a bit taller and bigger so I suit the role and I think you should always stick to your strengths,” he said.
“I’m just trying to be dominant on the pitch because I’m a centre back. I’ve got to help control the game and communicate to everyone.”
