Nepean Hockey’s men’s and women’s teams have come agonisingly close to pulling off a rare feat at the state championships.
While the men were crowned division two state champions with a 6-1 victory over Illawarra, the women fell agonisingly short of claiming the rare double — ultimately going down 3-1 to Metropolitan South West in the division one final.
The men’s campaign began in brilliant form as Nepean steamrolled their way through the first two games before suffering a narrow 2-0 loss to Illawarra.
However they regrouped to beat Metro South West 3-0 again and Southern Highlands 5-2 in the semi-final.
Coach Kieran Knowles said it was a phenomenal effort from his team, especially considering the quality of their opposition.
“The entire team showed great fighting qualities and we are delighted to now have the opportunity to step up to NSW division one next year.”
Meanwhile the women faced a tough challenge in the top division, frequently going up against state-representative opposition players.
After a 0-0 draw with Metro South West in the opening game, Nepean went undefeated through their three group games before taking out Sydney North West 3-1 to book their spot in the final.
