THE Spicer family has spent five Christmas mornings at Nepean Hospital.
They spent four of their own volition but on their first Christmas at the hospital in 2011, circumstances compelled them to be at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit when Chris and Naz’s daughter, Isabelle, was born 10 weeks premature.
The couple and their son, Mikael, rejoiced when doctors said Isabelle could go home on Christmas Day.
But, after 10 anxious weeks the Spicers, of Faulconbridge, thought of the 30 babies who would spend Christmas in the unit.
“We decided to do a Christmas breakfast and give presents to every family and baby spending time in intensive care,” Mrs Spicer said.
“We ended up cooking breakfast for more than 200 people.”
Mr Spicer said they set up a barbecue in the hospital grounds.
Mrs Spicer said one nurse asked them if they would be doing it again next year — and the Spicers have been serving breakfast with presents ever since.
Mr Spicer said the next year they brought along Santa (his brother Paul).
“Sometimes the parents have other kids at home who turn up — the kids who are visiting get a photograph with Santa and receive presents.
“Mostly we pay for everything, we have volunteers who help us cook.’’
He said Isabelle and Mikael often don’t get to open their presents until 2-3pm.
“They have learnt to be patient.”
