Penrith Cricket Club slammed into the University of NSW team on Saturday to continue their winning style in their second match of the season at Howell Oval.
Penrith batted first and racked up 227 runs for 7 and University appeared to be going smoothly when they started with 113-1.
But tight bowling by Jake Wholohan 0 for 22 (10 over) combined with the rest of the bowlers sharing wickets spelt the end for University. Pat Cummins took 3-43, Josh Lalor 3-23, Mick Castle 2-31 and Luke Hodges 2-37.
For Hodges the match was only his second appearance in first grade; he debuted against Parramatta last week where he also took two wickets.
Jonathon Sammut shone with the bat, topscoring with 78 runs and Tim Cummings scored 62.
Coach Michael Wholohan said the team was keen on the field following their first victory in their new season and looking forward to performing better than their semi-final finish last season.
One of the club’s top batsmen, Ryan Gibson, is tied up in the Matador Cup where he scored a century for the Cricket Australia X1 last Saturday.
Wholohan said Gibson who played in Penrith’s first match of the season would be away playing in the Matador Cup for some weeks.
This Saturday Penrith face North Sydney at Howell Oval, Penrith.
Wholohan said they would be aiming to score another victory to keep the momentum.
He said the team had backed up well from last season and their semi-final finish and club championship title had boosted the confidence of players.
“We are hoping for another successful season.”
