A man who stabbed his estranged wife in what was a ‘sustained and extremely violent’ attempt to kill her has been jailed – with the court hearing he had initially planned to commit self harm in front of her.

Simon Davis, 51, formerly of Stanhope Gardens was sentenced to 11 years behind bars – with a non-parole period of eight years in Sydney’s Downing Centre District Court on Friday, after a trial found him guilty of wounding a person with intention to murder.

He also pleaded guilty to wounding person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Agreed facts read out to the court state on March 1, 2021, Davis and his wife Tina had arranged to meet up following the separation of their 23-year marriage.

The court heard Davis put a kitchen knife in his pocket before meeting his wife, where he had planned to pull it out to “scare her” into showing him what was on her phone.

The court also heard Davis had later told a psychologist: “I wanted to see if she loved me.”

However, upon Davis pulling out the knife, Tina ran from the car which enraged Davis, prompting him to chase her with a knife.

When he caught up to her, Davis grabbed his ex-wife by the hair and sliced at her neck – causing her to start bleeding and fall on the ground.

He then continued slashing her with the knife, attempting to reach her neck while saying “I’m gonna f—king slash you”.

At this stage, the court heard three neighbours attempted to intervene, with one man standing in between Davis and his wife, as he continued to scream abuse at her.

The other neighbours were then able to take Tina into a nearby house where they called emergency services.

The court heard Davis’ offending was fuelled by his feelings of rage and rejection at his wife for choosing to end their marriage, as well as an “obsession” with her “perceived infidelity.”

In sentencing, Judge Baker accepted the attack was “sustained and extremely violent” and “included a concerted and repeated effort to kill the victim”.

“The victim did nothing to antagonize him, she just exercised her right to determine her own future, by choosing to separate their marriage.”

Simon Alan Davis was sentenced to a period of 11 years jail with 8 years non parole.
