A drug runner who shocked a Sydney magistrate with the whopping amount of cocaine he moved during his short-lived career as a cocaine supplier has avoided jail.

Rory Simms, 26, of Colyton, appeared at Penrith Local Court on Friday after previously pleading guilty to two counts of drug supply.

The court heard Simms played the part of a drug runner on two occasions when he supplied 55g of cocaine to buyers in March last year.

For his involvement in the illegal operation Simms profited just $200, which Magistrate Daniel Reiss struggled to believe, given the large amount of cocaine he offloaded.

“He did all that for just $200 … he was running this amount of cocaine for only $200?,” an incredulous Mr Reiss asked the court. “How is that believable?”

Simms’ lawyer said his client had become a runner to feed his own cocaine addiction, rather than to make a quick buck.

“My client maintains his position he was supplying coke to feed his own addiction,” he said. “After his relationship broke down, his substance abuse spiralled out of control.”

The magistrate was also reluctant in accepting Simms involvement was limited to “just being a street runner”.

“He’s NOT a street runner, a street runner is a dial-a-dealer who gets out of the car with a little baggy of cocaine. Is that not a street runner?,” Mr Reiss said.

Both the police prosecutor and Simms’ lawyer conceded the Colyton man performed the role of a “runner” and that he was at the “lower end” of the hierarchy alleged to have been directed by Brandon Sardi, who was the “top operative”.

In sentencing, Mr Reiss took into account Simms lack of criminal history, his remorse and the proactive steps he had taken in better himself since his arrest.

Simms was convicted of both charges sentenced to an 12-month intensive correction order, or jail sentence to be served in the community, and 100 hours community service

Brandon Sardi has been charged with four counts of supplying prohibited drugs, three counts of supplying drugs on an ongoing basis, two counts of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, and two counts of drugs possession. He is yet to enter any pleas.
