The drunken hoon who killed two people — and unborn twins — in a horrific crash in Orchard Hills last September has pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter.
Richard Moananu, 30, of Glenmore Park, was involved in a head-on collision on The Northern Rd that killed 23-year-old Katherine Hoang, her two unborn children, and a 17-year-old girl.
Moananu appeared before Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt at Penrith Local Court on Friday morning, and pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.
A string of other sentences were referred to the district court for sentencing on February 7, but have been listed as back-up charges according to court documents.
Several other charges have been withdrawn.
Police allege Moananu was driving on The Northern Rd when he allegedly veered onto the wrong side of the road and collided head on with the Hoang family’s Nissan Tiida.
Prior to the crash, it is alleged two other vehicles had to take evasive action to avoid Moananu.
He was allegedly unlicensed and travelling 45 kilometres over the speed limit at the time of the crash.
He also allegedly blew a blood alcohol reading of 0.204. The legal limit for fully licensed drivers is 0.05.
Mrs Hoang, 23, was only days away from giving birth to her babies at the time of the accident, which also killed the 17-year-old girl who was driving.
Her husband Bronco was seriously injured in the crash, but survived.
Moananu also suffered serious leg injuries in the crash. He will remain behind bars as Magistrate Hiatt formally refused bail.
