Police and the NRMA were forced to break a window to rescue two dogs from a locked car parked at Penrith station this morning.

NRMA spokesman Peter Khoury said a crew was called to Penrith railway station at 7.17am this morning, with temperatures forecast to rise to 36C.

He said when crews arrived, they found two dogs which could be heard barking locked in a car and no owner in sight.

“Alongside police, we tried to unlock the car before breaking the window,” he said.

“Working with the police, we managed to rescue the two dogs who were fine.”

Mr Khoury said the NRMA responded to more than 3500 incidents of both pets and children locked in hot cars over the past 12 months.

“At 36C, the temperature inside a car hits almost 80C,” he said.

“It doesn’t take very long for pets or children to become distressed and then have very serious issues.

“You’ll get organ failure, extreme dehydration, and unfortunately there have been fatalities.

“In the last 12 months, we responded to 1535 pets and 2054 children locked in cars.”

Mr Khoury encouraged parents and pet owners to be extremely careful no matter the temperature outside.

“The overwhelming majority of cases we see are when a parent or owner accidentally locks them in a car,” he said.

“Having said that, there are still far too many cases where parents or owners will simply walk away from the car.

“People also make the assumption that it’s OK in winter, which it’s not. We encourage people to take their children or pets with them whenever they leave the car.”
