A Werrington man who spent nine hours on a rooftop in Sydney’s west to avoid arrest on outstanding warrants, sparking a nine-hour siege, allegedly escaped police custody.
Cody Flack-Butfield, 29, faced Penrith Local Court via video link from the Amber Laurel Correctional Centre on Monday where he did not make an application for bail.
It comes after he was arrested around 5am in Kingswood on Sunday, February 23, after he allegedly spent nine hours on the roof of a Victoria St unit to avoid arrest on several outstanding warrants.
Police went to the home around 8.15pm the night before to arrest Flack-Butfield after he allegedly failed to appear in Windsor Local Court in January for charges of driving despite never holding a licence and fleeing the scene of a crash where someone else was injured at Wisemans Ferry, near Windsor, on July 18, 2024.
He allegedly climbed onto the roof after spotting police, sparking the siege.
Police negotiators, the Dog Unit, Public Order and Riot Squad, Traffic and Highway Patrol and Police Rescue officers were all called to the scene.
Court documents allege Flack-Butfield hurled roof tiles at police and police vehicles during the siege, and damaged one police car and an Isuzu MU-X.
The documents also allege Flack-Butfield was caught with 0.76g of methamphetamine once he was arrested, and had escaped police custody between 7.10 and 7.15pm on February 23, hours after he was arrested.
He was charged with assault police, two counts of destroy/damage property, throw missile at police officer (no actual bodily harm), possess drug and escape police custody, as well as failing to appear in the Windsor Local Court.
He has not entered any pleas.
He was remanded in custody and is expected to face the drug court in Penrith on February 27.
