The seat of Londonderry will see five candidates battle for the seat. Incumbent Labor MP Prue Car will attempt to retain her seat against four challengers. Her main threat appears to be Liberal candidate Belinda Hill. The odds currently favour Prue Car on $1.01, with Belinda Hill on $14.
NAME: Prue Car
PARTY: Australian Labor Party
A BIT ABOUT YOU:
“I’m a single Mum raising a little boy in Jordan Springs with our groodle puppy called Flash. “Over the past four years I have been fighting for our community as the Member for Londonderry. I am standing for re-election on the 23 March so that I can continue to fight for Western Sydney.
“As a proud member of the Daley Labor team, I look forward to a NSW Government that will put people first.
YOUR POLITICAL BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
Since being elected to parliament in 2015 I have made it my mission to fight for issues that matter to our community. Prior to my election I served eight years on Penrith City Council where I was involved in community campaigns standing up for Western Sydney — including fighting plans to stop radioactive waste being transferred from Hunters Hill to Kemps Creek.
TOP THREE PRIORITIES/ISSUES IN YOUR ELECTORATE:
Gladys Berejiklian and the Liberals have ignored our community. The Liberal State Government is spending billions of dollars of stadiums while our local schools and hospitals are left behind.
Since my election, I have fought for our local schools and have been holding the Government to account on the promised Jordan Springs Primary School — a school that the Liberals have failed to deliver on time.
I have been fighting for basic services like buses in suburbs like Claremont Meadows and Marsden Park. The Liberals have allowed developers to run riot and build thousands of homes without the infrastructure that our community needs.
NAME: Belinda Hill
PARTY: Liberal Party
A BIT ABOUT YOU:
“I am a long term resident of Londonderry where my husband Ian and I are raising our children Scarlet and Trindall.
“I am a passionate supporter of local charities and community groups, including the Penrith Community Kitchen, The Haven DV Shelter, Girl Guides, the Luke Priddis Autism Foundation and an active member of the Rural Fire Service.
“I have extensive business experience, having owned and operated two retail stores and now a successful local construction business.”
YOUR POLITICAL BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:
I am a long term Liberal Party Member, and was the candidate for the East Ward by-election for Penrith Council in 2018.
TOP THREE PRIORITIES/ISSUES IN YOUR ELECTORATE:
I will fight on behalf of our community to help keep the cost of everyday living down for families, through initiatives like doubling of our Active Kids rebate, the toll relief program and our new $50 weekly public transport cap.
I will continue to advocate for upgrades and improvements to our schools, and will deliver airconditioning in 26 local public schools.
I am also focused on supporting the completion of the $1 billion redevelopment of Nepean hospital and employing 329 new staff in our local health district, including 47 doctors and 195 nurses and midwives.
NAME: David Bowen
PARTY: Sustainable Australia
A BIT ABOUT YOU:
“I am 47 years old man, married with two children and have been a local resident all my life. “I am a qualified horticulturist and have had my own gardening business for 25 years. I have worked as a TAFE teacher both face-to-face and online and as a supervisor for environmental restoration companies.
“I am passionate about protecting local natural areas and historical buildings from overdevelopment or destruction and I work as a volunteer bushland regenerator in the Penrith area. I am a co-author of a reference book about western Sydney’s native flora.
YOUR POLITICAL BACKGROUND/EXPERIEN CE:
I have been involved with assisting local independents during Council elections and have been a member of the Western Sydney Conservation Alliance where we lobbied major parties for better outcomes for western Sydney, including the former ADI site at St Marys, Wianamatta Nature Reserve at Cranebrook, Penrith Lakes and saving the Grey Gum trees along Mulgoa Rd, Penrith.
TOP THREE PRIORITIES/ISSUES IN YOUR ELECTORATE:
1. Preventing 5000 homes to be built around Penrith Lakes. Many people have believed this area will for recreational purposes only- not another sea of houses with the added traffic congestion and a destruction of the views to the mountains.
2. Preventing the raising of Warragamba Dam. This is a green light to developers to build on floodplains in the Londonderry district which are currently home to farms, sporting fields and open green space.
3. Protecting the critically endangered Cumberland Plain Woodland from further destruction.
NAME: Charlie Pierce
PARTY: Greens
A BIT ABOUT YOU:
“I work part-time as an Environmental and Laboratory Contract Professional. My wife Julie and I have been together for 40 years and we have two adult daughters.
“I passionately support a sustainable economy and environment. Having worked as a primary producer, I am aware of the challenges facing Londonderry’s rural community as the cities continue to encroach on agricultural activities.
“I’ve spent 40 years working in environmental industries; including: environmental chemistry, contaminated site evaluation, water & waste water treatment and waste management.
“It is my greatest desire to represent our community’s values in parliament and hold the Together we can create a fairer and cleaner future for all of us.
YOUR POLITICAL BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE: My only political experience has been working as a volunteer in both Greens and independent parties for the last three elections.
TOP THREE PRIORITIES/ISSUES IN YOUR ELECTORATE:
Transport. There is inadequate public transport options across western Sydney which includes Londonderry.
Education. New schools should be managed to be fully operational before development and population growth can create an education deficit.
Planning and Infrastructure. Ecologically sustainable development must be the primary consideration underlying all planning decisions. Environmental and social considerations in the decision-making process have been secondary to economic considerations for many years and this needs to be reversed.
