The technology that will be used to move the new railway bridge into position over Castlereagh Rd is the first of its kind in Australia according to Lindsay federal Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh.
Ms McIntosh joined Penrith state Liberal MP Stuart Ayres for a tour this week of the construction site where the new rail bridge currently sits.
She said the construction team would use self-propelled modular transporters to move the new bridge into place.
A self-propelled modular transporter is a large platform vehicle with a large array of wheels.
“This is a major achievement for the project, with months and months of planning carried out to prepare for the installation of the new rail bridge,” she said.
“Once complete, the project will have provided more than 1000 jobs.”
Mr Ayres said the transporters had been imported from Belgium.
“Once the old rail bridge is demolished, the new bridge will be moved into its final position by specialist crews,” he said.
“The Australian and NSW governments are getting on with building the vital infrastructure needed to support growth in Sydney’s west and southwest.
“This includes the upgrade of the Mulgoa Rd/Castlereagh Rd corridor which carries thousands of motorists each day.”
Castlereagh Rd will be closed between Jane St and Thornton Dr from 10pm on December 25 to 5am on December 31.
The Blue Mountains train line will be closed between Penrith and Bathurst from 2am on December 26 to 10pm on December 30. Trains will still operate between Penrith and the Sydney CBD.
