It has been more than 467 days since Lindsay Federal Liberal MP Melissa McIntosh pledged $1 million to install lighting along the Great River Walk in Western Sydney.
But more than a year on Penrith Council are yet to receive a single cent for the project.
Ms McIntosh pledged the million-dollar idea as part of her election promises for the Federal campaign in the western Sydney seat, promising the funds would be used to “keep Lindsay safe”.
The funds would allow the installation of lighting in Tench Reserve between Jamison Rd and Nepean Ave.
“Nepean River is a recreational hub for our community and everyone should be able to enjoy it,” Ms McIntosh said at the time of the pledge. “I know many residents, particularly women, have felt they have been unable to use the Great River Walk at night because of the lack of lighting.
“No one should feel unsafe in our public spaces and this funding will ensure that our River can be equally enjoyed by all.”
But when asked if council had received the funding, a Penrith Council spokesman said no.
“Council is yet to receive the funding as the deed agreement has not been received from the funding department,” he said. “It is something we are regularly following up.”
In response to the lack of funding awarded for the project, Ms McIntosh said several of her hard-fought” election commitments were underway or complete.
“I had a productive conversation today with the General Manager of Penrith City Council and re-affirmed my commitment to ensuring the lighting along the Great River Walk is delivered for our community as it is an essential safety upgrade,” she said.
“I am in regular contact with the Deputy Prime Minister, whose office is working with the Department of Infrastructure.
“I am eager to have this project completed for our community as soon as possible.”
