Two pawnshop workers in the Hawkesbury were subjected to a terrifying ordeal last week when a man allegedly tied them up before stealing cash and jewellery from the store.

Mitchell Broadhurst, 31, of South Windsor, was arrested on Wednesday over his alleged role in the January 15 incident, and faced Penrith Local Court for the first time Thursday.

According to police facts read to the court by Magistrate Bree Chisholm, police will allege Mr Broadhurst entered Mega Cash on George St, South Windsor, at about 9.10am on January 15 while armed with a 7cm kitchen knife.

They will allege Broadhurst then threatened to stab the two staff members while telling them to open the safe.

Broadhurst then allegedly tied the two workers up with electrical cable and left with a canvas cash bag with more than $11,000.

He was arrested after a traffic incident in Windsor where he allegedly hit the back of a Toyota HiLux on Wednesday afternoon in a Holden Commodore that police allege was taken from another man without his permission.

He was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon, take and drive without consent, dangerous driving, negligent drive, and driving while disqualified.

Police will allege Mr Broadhurst matches some key descriptors of the man caught on CCTV footage, including a distinctive tattoo on his hand.

However, Mr Broadhurst’s lawyer said his client knew nothing about the robbery, and denied being in the pawnshop at the time of the incident.

“Police are relying on their own interpretation of CCTV,” he said.

Mitchell Broadhurst will next appear in Penrith Local Court on March 19.

“They searched his home, and there was nothing of interest found which is in support of what they’ve said.

“I’ve seen stronger armed robbery cases.

“The take-and-drive charge will be a plea of not guilty in due course because he’s had access to that vehicle for six months.”

The prosecution “strongly opposed” bail, citing the safety of both the community and the victims.

Magistrate Chisholm described the charges as “serious” and said they would carry a significant period of full-time custody if Broadhurst was found guilty.

“Community safety looms large, and I’m not satisfied there are conditions that can protect the public,” she said.

Mr Broadhurst will next appear in court on March 19.
