On the heels of his next career move, one of Mount Druitt’s greatest exports, sporting legend and radio host Mark ‘MG’ Geyer sat down with Penrith Press for a chat about why he’ll always stay close to his western Sydney roots.
The former Panther has fond memories growing up in western Sydney, describing afternoons at the mud baths on the Nepean river banks and evenings at Penrith drive-in as “memories that stay with you forever.”
The fifty-five-year-old also credits the close-knit community for shaping him toward the person he is today.
“You just have to look at Jamison park on a Saturday, you’ll see netball courts, soccer fields, that just encapsulates our spirit: we all get out and have a go,” he says.
“When I retired from league in 2000 I was never going to say no to anything, I wasn’t totally comfortable with a media career at the start, but I gave it a go... my advice is you only get one go, so dive in and start swimming”.
“People from the inner city look at us and might go ‘oh Penrith, that’s the place all the way out there’, but we have everything we need here. It’s such a close knit community and we have a lot of superstars here.”
Looking at the present and toward the future, Geyer says it’s a more exciting time than ever for the area.
“The way Penrith has grown as a leading city in the state is because of the people that live here, they respect where they live and others around them it is not hard to be nice.”
“There’s a lot happening and we’re seeing things grow exponentially, for example western Sydney airport was never something we’d think would happen in our lifetime, but it’s getting closer and that’s encouraging for the area.”
In 2020 Mr Geyer, alongside his two children opened up MG ACTIV a gym in South Penrith, where he says Nepean’s community spirit is as obvious as anywhere.
“We’re more like a club than a gym, there’s no mirrors inside because it’s not about what you look like, we’re all about training and having fun with like-minded people.”
Following on from his success on Triple M’s breakfast radio, Mr Geyer’s next media move will see him launching a brand new show with Mick Molloy, starting Monday.
“I can’t wait to learn from him, he’s one of the superstars of radio and out west they seem to love him, I’ve had people say to me, we can’t wait for you two to be on radio together,” Mr Geyer says.
