It takes a lot to impress Mark Geyer.
It takes a lot to impress Mark Geyer.
The Penrith Panthers legend is one of the most intimidating big men rugby league has ever seen. But not even 'MG' could contain his awe upon seeing Bankwest Stadium for the first time.
"It's more impressive in the flesh," Geyer said on Tuesday as he arrived alongside 20 lucky Triple M's Rush Hour listeners for a private tour of the $300 million venue.
"It's about time the western suburbs of Sydney have got a stadium as good as this. I know most listeners on radio and most viewers on TV live west of Strathfield so it's great that they're rewarded with a luxurious stadium like this.
"It's finally someone taking notice of the heartland (of rugby league)."
While taking in the spectacle of the 30,000 seat stadium, Geyer couldn't help but take a trip down memory lane.
"I remember coming here to Cumberland Oval as a kid," he said.
"I remember when they burnt Cumberland Oval in 81 after the grand final. Then I remember in 86 when Parramatta Stadium was built.
"Now they've got this which tops them all."
Geyer added that he couldn't wait until Bankwest Stadium hosts its first Western Sydney derby clash between the Panthers and the Parramatta Eels.
"I've got goosebumps just thinking about it," he said.
"They've got a ground that matches the feud."
Fans will get their first opportunity to take a look at the facilities on Sunday when Bankwest Stadium hosts a special community open day.
