Labor matches Liberal’s commitment to Dunheved Rd upgrade
Both Labor and the Liberal parties have matched a promise to deliver a $63.5 million upgrade to Dunheved Rd.
Labor has matched a commitment by the Liberals to deliver a $63.5 million upgrade to Dunheved Rd in Penrith.
Both party’s have promised upgrades to Dunheved Rd between Richmond and Werrington roads in Penrith.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the Liberal Party’s funding is part of a $167.5 million investment into western Sydney transport, aimed at reducing congestion and getting residents out of traffic.
“We want to supercharge our congestion-busting plan across Sydney particularly across the west,” he said.
“The more time you spend stuck in traffic is less time spent at home with your family or getting paid at work.”
On Monday, Labor matched the figure, and revealed its plan to upgrade the congested road, but will partner with the NSW Government to transform Dunheved Rd into a four-lane dual carriageway.
Liberal candidate for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh’s campaign has centred around the need for the upgrade and said the funding has come as a result of a strong community voice.
“I’ve been speaking with people in our community about their concerns, about safety and congestion on Dunheved Rd and petitioned for an investment,” Ms McIntosh said.
“I’m delighted the Morrison Government has heard the concerns of our community and committed more than $63 million to this key issue.”
Labor candidate for Lindsay, and former state minister, Diane Beamer said the road has been “neglected” by previous governments and “safety has been compromised”.
“Despite being one of the busiest roads in NSW, used by an average of over 21,000 vehicles a day, the Abbott-Turnbull-Morrison Government has neglected Dunheved Rd over its time in office,” Ms Beamer said.
“Over the past five years there have been 87 accidents on Dunheved Rd, including 39 (accidents) involving injuries and Labor’s investment in the road will improve road safety while also enhancing productivity.”
On top of the upgrade to Dunheved Rd, the Liberals also announced $20 million to increase commuter carparking at Kingswood and St Marys trains stations and $15 million for Emu Plains.
Neither party provided a time frame to when the Dunheved Rd project will be carried out.
