Labor will build a $10 million student accommodation complex in Kingswood to help young people study and pursue a career.

If elected on May 18, a federal Shorten Government has promised to build an Education First Youth Foyer in Kingswood, a student accommodation complex that will target young people aged 16 to 24 at risk of homelessness.

The foyer will provide up to two years accommodation and support at risk young people so they have the support they need to properly engage in housing, education and employment.

Labor candidate for Lindsay, Diane Beamer, said the investment will assist young people like never before.

“This will be a real game changer for at risk youth in Penrith and surrounding areas, providing opportunities that simply don’t exist at present,” Ms Beamer said.

“This sort of intensive support can make a real difference in the life of a young person from a disadvantaged background.”

It is envisaged the foyer will be located at the TAFE NSW Kingswood campus, next to the Western Sydney University.

It will be staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week and will include post-placement support for students after they leave the foyer.

There are already 15 similar foyer’s across the country and Ms Beamer said the benefits of these type of accommodation options have been proven and urged the State Government to come on board.

“These foyers have runs on the board in terms of lifting up young people and supporting them to study and pursue a career,” she said.

“I really encourage the NSW Government to get on board and support this great initiative, just as the Queensland Government has.”

No timeline has been given on the project.
