Kingswood teen faces four charges in Penrith Court

A teenager who allegedly led police on a pursuit through Jamisontown in a stolen car will be released from custody on bail.
Daniel Brackenrig, 18, of Kingswood, was granted strict bail by Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt in Penrith Local Court on Thursday afternoon.
Brackenrig appeared via audiovisual link after refusing to leave his cell during his planned appearance on Monday.
He is charged with knowingly driving a stolen conveyance, driving without a licence, reckless driving in a furious or dangerous manner, and resisting an officer in execution of duty.
According to court documents, police allege they saw Brackenrig driving a stolen white Kia Cerato in Jamisontown.
His lawyer told Magistrate Hiatt there were a number of factors he should consider including his young age, the fact he’d never served a custodial sentence, and his potential vulnerability in jail as an Indigenous man.
The lawyer also told Magistrate Hiatt that Brackenrig suffered from several mental-health issues that he wasn’t receiving medication for in custody, and had a partner pregnant with his first child.
The prosecutor argued Brackenrig presented an unacceptable risk to community safety and failing to appear at future court dates.
She said while Brackenrig’s record was limited, he had a number of incidents over a short period of time.
She argued Brackenrig wasn’t a candidate for bail as he had a previous history of not complying with bail conditions.
Magistrate Hiatt said that while he noted Brackenrig had prior history of breaching, he would grant bail under strict conditions.
Brackenrig must reside at a residence in Kingswood, report to Penrith police station daily, and must not approach any prosecution witnesses.
He must also stay inside the Kingswood house from 7pm to 7am, refrain from alcohol and drugs unless prescribed by a doctor, and be subjected to both curfew and drug and alcohol checks.
Magistrate Hiatt warned him that he would struggle to get further bail if he breached any of the conditions.
He will next appear before court on February 20.
