A Willmot teenager who didn’t take her dog to the vet despite it having two broken legs has been fined $2000 for animal cruelty.
Kaitlin Brown, 18, did not attend Penrith Local Court on Tuesday afternoon but was sentenced by Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt on a charge of failing to provide adequate vet treatment to an owned injured animal.
Brown attempted to have the matter adjourned due to sickness, but Magistrate Hiatt refused as she’d previously missed a December 9 appearance.
According to court documents, Brown had an argument with two other people on Park Ave on November 18.
Police said they later located Brown at Kingswood train station and returned with her to Park Ave.
Once police arrived, they found a two-year-old staffie named Boss sitting in a room with obvious injuries. The dog could neither stand up nor walk.
Police said Brown told them she had been advised the dog had been thrown from a second-storey balcony, at which time she retrieved the dog and put him in a room with no food or water.
Brown told police a Sam Wong of Kingswood was responsible for throwing the dog from the balcony, but police checks proved he didn’t exist.
Court documents show Brown admitted to lying to police, and a witness of the scene told police Boss had been pushed from the balcony.
Boss and another female staffie, Izzy, were seized by the RSPCA due to neglect.
Court documents said Brown appeared to have “little regards for the animal, and found the interaction with police funny”.
