A young woman accused of decapitating her mother with kitchen knives inside their family home in western Sydney last year has been committed to stand trial in the NSW Supreme Court.

Police will allege Jessica Camilleri killed her 57-year-old mother, Rita Camilleri, following a violent argument in their family kitchen, in the western Sydney surburb of St Clair, between 11pm and 11.30pm on the night of July 20.

It is alleged Jessica then called police and told them what she had allegedly done to her mother before officers arrived at the St Clair Avenue home.

Mrs Camilleri’s body was found in the kitchen of the family home, while it is alleged her daughter then went outside and dropped her mother’s head in a neighbour’s front yard before police arrived on scene.

A young child was also being babysat in the house at the time of the incident.

Knives believed to have been used during the incident were taken by police on the night and forensically examined.

Camilleri was subsequently charged with murder.

The 26-year-old, who remains in custody, did not appear before Penrith Local Court today, where her fitness (to stand trial) to be tried was raised.

Magistrate Geoffrey Hiatt determined the issue of fitness was raised in “good faith” and committed Camilleri for trial in the NSW Supreme Court.

Camilleri did not apply for bail and it was formally refused.

An arraignment has been scheduled for May 1, for which Camilleri will be required to appear via audiovisual link.
