An undercover police sting took down the son of a ex-senior cop, who was caught red-handed with more than half a million dollars of unexplained cold, hard cash in the streets of western Sydney, it can be revealed.
The downfall of Gregory Brain, 37, of Cambridge Park, can be revealed with the upline supplier of a cocaine syndicate pleading guilty to three counts of drug supply and dealing with the criminal proceeds of crime more than $100,000 at Penrith Local Court on Friday.
Documents tendered to the court detail how Brain came onto the radar of law authorities in 2019, following a strike force investigation into a cocaine syndicate operating across western Sydney and Bathurst area.
The agreed police facts state Brain was the syndicate’s upline supplier.
The court was told the police sting was executed in May 2020 when an undercover police officer placed an order for cocaine with a dealer. Police allege in court documents the dealer texted a supplier, with that supplier then texting Brain.
Brain, at that point, was being monitored by police both physically and electronically.
On October 7, 2020 police allege the Cambridge Park man was recorded arranging the supply of 84g of cocaine, with the handover taking place at a work site on Cilona Ave, Penrith.
Police claim part of this batch was supplied to the dealer, who ultimately provided it to the undercover police officer.
A week later it is alleged Brain arranged the supply of another 84g of cocaine, meeting the same supplier at a work site on Sandpiper Cres, Claremont Meadows. In November, the court was told the same exchange took place at Jamisontown netball courts.
According to the police case contained in court documents, the lucrative enterprise came undone on February 25, 2021 when Brain and his partner were stopped by police on Luxford Rd, Bidwill.
Police searched the car and found $556,000 inside an ALDI shopping bag in the boot. The cash was in bundles of $10,000, placed in four vacuum sealed bags, court documents state.
Brain could not provide police with any explanation for having $556,000 in his possession.
The Cambridge Park man was arrested on March 10, 2021 and has been remanded in custody since.
The matter will return to Penrith District Court next month.
