An up-and-coming rugby league player has pleaded to hindering police attending a 3:30am brawl involving about 70 people at a McDonald’s restaurant at The Rocks.
Powerfully built 24-year-old Geofrey Duku, from Colyton in western Sydney, was in a drunk and emotional state when he saw police officers speak to his younger brother in the early hours of Sunday, March 15 in the McDonald’s restaurant.
The police facts state Duku’s younger brother had aggressively pushed past people which saw him given a move on direction for causing fear, alarm and being drunk in public.
A “heavily intoxicated” Duku, who represented Penrith Brothers in the semi-professional Ron Massey Cup competition in 2019, then stood in front of the police officer and began arguing aggressively.

He was pulled to the side so police could keep control of the tense situation however, Duku kept trying to get back at the policeman from behind with two police officers needed to keep him away.
There is no suggestion either of the men were involved in the brawl.
His lawyer told the court the 24-year-old, who toured England last year for rugby league, responded emotionally and now knows he could’ve handled the situation with police differently.
Magistrate Susan McIntyre said it was clear he was “heavily intoxicated” and warned him to handle his alcohol.
“I can’t imagine it would assist in your sporting career moving forward,” she said.
He was sentenced to a one-year conditional release order without conviction.
