Gavin Duncan: Katoomba High School teacher jailed for sex with student
A high school teacher who entered into a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student said she gave him the “attention he craved”. He will now spend the rest of the year behind bars.

A Blue Mountains teacher who had sex with a female student three times and told her to wear a skirt to school so he could “f*** her in the classroom” has been jailed.
Gavin Malcolm Duncan, 32, of Jamisontown learned his fate in Penrith District Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to three counts of having sexual intercourse with a person in his care.
He will serve at least seven months behind bars, with an additional eight months on parole over his sexual relationship with a 17-year-old student at Katoomba High School.
Police said Duncan would speak to the student about school issues and personal issues, including relationships, as their conversations became more “flirtatious”.
The relationship progressed when he gave the teen his mobile number and they began texting outside of school hours.
In June the following year, Duncan was chatting with the student when he paid for a Uber to drop her off at his Glenmore Park home so they could have sex.
As the teen left his home, Duncan told her to wear a skirt to school the next day so he could “f*** her in the classroom”.
Several weeks later, the pair arranged to meet again after exchanging flirty text messages at a State of Origin game.
While at his home, the pair had sex a second time before meeting up again a week later.
During this third sexual encounter, Duncan told the teen, “Everything about this is so wrong, but this feels so f***ing good”.
The following week, the pair met up to discuss their relationship at school, with Duncan expressing his concerns about being caught out.
“We shouldn’t do this. You may have feelings for me and then get the s***s with me and go tell someone about this,” he said.
The pair continued their sexual relationship after the student turned 18 and until she graduated from the school.
However in mid-2019, rumours about the pair’s relationship began spreading through the school. Duncan was approached about the rumours by the school principal and subsequently told the teen to deny their relationship.
He was suspended from the school in June last year after confessing to a fellow teacher who contacted then police.
In a police interview, Duncan told officers the relationship was “opportunistic” and “random” and fulfilled his desire for attention.
He initially told officers the student was 18 when they had sex, but later admitted she was aged 17 when their sexual relationship began.
He will be eligible for parole in January next year.
