An eye-watering $1.8 billion in taxpayer funds has been dedicated to securing the Western Sydney Airport Rail project — stretching from St Marys to the heart of the Aerotropolis.
Federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg revealed the billion-dollar slush fund for the major rail project as part of a $1.9 billion NSW infrastructure investment portfolio during Tuesday’s Federal Budget.
The major infrastructure investment for Sydney’s booming west comes just days after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced construction work along the like would begin before the end of the year, while promising the driverless metro and its six stations between the Western Line and the Aerotropolis precinct would be open when planes take off in 2026.
The treasurer said rebuilding the country’s economy post-COVID meant building more roads, rail and bridges.
“This Budget, we will expand our record 10-year infrastructure pipeline which is already supporting 100,000 jobs on worksites across the country today,” he said.
“Together with what we have announced since the start of the crisis, measures in this Budget will see $14 billion in new and accelerated infrastructure projects support a further 40,000 jobs.
“This will boost productivity and deliver long term benefits for Australians.”
Confirmed stations included along the line will be built St Marys, Orchard Hills on the eastern side of Kent Rd, Luddenham near Luddenham Rd, the Airport Business Park south of Elizabeth Dr, Western Sydney Aerotropolis east of Badgerys Creek Rd at Bringelly and at the airport’s terminal.
A total of 20 properties expected to be acquired as part of the multibillion-dollar, joint state and federal government infrastructure program.
