A western Sydney public school could soon get an influx of new students and staff with plans lodged to build new classrooms among other upgrades.

Cranebrook High School, on Hosking St, lodged $3 million plans to build three new “general learning spaces”, a seminar room, a “shared-learning space”, and a communications room.

The plans would also see alterations to the art workshop, new covered walkways, a covered “outdoor learning area” and spaces to park bikes.

Some landscaping would be required to build the new classrooms and six trees would be removed, however the plans say nine new trees would be planted as part of works.

As well as the new infrastructure, the works would allow Cranebrook High School to increase its student population by 75 to 939.

The school would also add seven jobs if the proposal was approved.

A planner from DFP Planning Consultants, on behalf of the Department of Education, said the plans were a “positive addition to the high school”.

“The proposed works do not result in any traffic and parking impacts or amenity impacts,” they said.

“The increased school population is a reflection of increased residential densities and population in the school catchment.

“Therefore, the school has been identified as requiring upgrades to accommodate this forecast increase in enrolments.

“The proposal is considered to satisfactorily respond to the opportunities and constraints of the site and the relevant legislation, is unlikely to result in adverse impacts in the locality, and is worthy of council approval.”

Cranebrook High School’s relieving principal Stephen Uitterlinden said the school had been in conversation with the Department of Education for a “number of months” about the plans.

“There’s some envisaged increase in enrolment,” he said.

“Over the last three or four years we’ve had a steady increase in the junior school, and that’s projected to increase with Jordan Springs in our drawing area.

“We’re really excited at the prospect of having a number of additional classrooms to help us meet the needs of our students and an expanding populations.”
